I'm from the UK and I'm losing my job next month. Even if I couldn't find a new job I thought I would still be ok because I am intending on claiming for Job Seekers Allowance and Housing Benefit.
But people have been telling me that I may not be entitled to anything because I am married and live with my wife.
My wife only works 30hrs a week for minimum wage, which only works out at about £600 a month. Our rent alone is £400 per month, and with council tax, gas, electric, water, food, there is no way we would survive on her wage alone. Surely I must be entitled to some help. Is there anybody else in the same situation?
I'm worried that I won't find a new job in time, so I just wanted to know what to expect when I go to the Job Centre next month.

I'm pretty sure that you WON'T get JSA whilst living with a spouse with a full-time job. As for housing benefit, you certainly won't get the full amount but you may get a proportionate amount.
If not doing so already your wife needs to claim working tax credits immediately, if she's working 30 hours or more a week on minimum wage then WTCs should provide a substantial boost [assuming she's over 21 (I think)].

EDIT: Even if you & your wife aren't currently entitled to WTCs that may change if you become unemployed so be sure to keep them informed in the first instance. |

yes you can get the dole (jobseekers allowance), and also some help with housing benefit, to help pay the rent. also you can get discount on the council tax. the bills no help, just have to use less, if it is possible.
but finding any job isbetter, as the dole is £47 a WEEK!!! less than a days pay, so any job is better than that, and if oyur wife iddnt work and you got full housing benefit, they only give oyu aobut 70% so you have to use your dole to pay the rest.
but yes you are entitled, as your wife does not earn a lot of money.
