I have asked a previous employer for a reference, and all I need is confirmation of employment dates and job duties, but they have refused on Data protection grounds. Is there any legal obligation to supply information if I requesy it?

No one is "entitled" to a reference. It is upto the previous employer if they give one or not.
They should however advise the dates you worked there as a minimum and the DP grounds is total rubbish as you are allowing, in fact requesting, that the information be released.

if your employer doesn't for those grounds the new employer can probably check your employment through your sin number but that would require you giving them that information before you're hired which some people are not comfortable doing |

No, they have no legal obligation to provide the info. Almost all employers will though, especially if you give them written permission. They are either overly paranoid or are playing games with you. |

No they are not. You can however get any prospective employer to send a request, signed by you to release infromation, direct to your previous employer. |

Try contacting someone in the Human Resources Department and ask them if they can give the dates of service and job title ONLY. You may need to send a release for their records, but they should be able to do this for you. |
