Am I entitled to unemployment?
|
decided to go back to college 2 weeks ago. My job is M-F 9-6 pm, my class schedule is 8-2pm M-Th. I told my employer I would be able to work 3-6pm. However, they stated they need a full-time employee (I'm a receptionist in a medical office) and will be looking for someone else to work full-time. Meanwhile, I can stay and work those hours, till they find someone. Can I collect unemployment from my job, since they are cutting me? Additional Details By the way, I'm in Maryland

Am I entitled to unemployment?
probably not
you are the one who changed your availability and you caused your hours to be reduced.
they could have let you go immediately and since you are no longer available you still would not qualify.
you should file, you can do so on-line....
even though you probably won't qualify the only way to know for sure is to file.
the only sure thing about unemployment insurance is:
nothing is certain until you file and a decision is made. |

The rules vary from state to state - but in general, if you voluntarily quit or reduce your hours, then no, you can't get unemployment. You basically told them you were not available for full-time work, so that was your choice. |

Check with your state unemployment office.
However, I suspect you won't be able to collect unemployment. Your job is still there. You're just asking that the hours be changed, and your employer is saying no. Actually, your employer is being reasonably generous, allowing you to work your desired hours until they find someone else.
It's you who made the decision to go back to college. It's you who decided to take classes that conflicted with your work schedule. It's you who decided that you won't be available to work most of your assigned schedule. Really, they're not cutting you. You cut yourself.
At least that's my analysis. But certainly check with your state unemployment office for their interpretation. |

No, they aren't cutting you. YOU are the one who changed your availability by deciding to go back to school. They don't have to accommodate your request for different or part time hours. |

Probably not.. since you're techinally quitting to go back to school. Since you're the one choosing to not work full time anymore you aren't entitled to full time employee benefits. |

You weren't laid off, so I highly doubt it. Especially in the current climate. I'm sure your employer would contest any claim and win. Unless the schooling is directly related to your job. |

I *think* that if you were working full-time before, which 9-6 would be, then you could collect it. I think you are allowed to collect it esp. since they are cutting you from the job. Best thing to do is just to do to your unemployment office in your town to make sure! |

Your going back to college is a good idea. I believe ,your employer will support you if this is work-related. Best thing to do is to contact the unemployment office for the requirements and eligibility. |
