Am I just being hated on or what?

Over the past few weeks, I have been contacting different employment agencies and today I went into one where the majority of the people there, were of Spanish descent. I don't put all cultures in a box, just because someone speaks Spanish and I don't want to offend anyone here, when it comes to race. However, everyone in the room spoke Spanish, from the employees that worked there, to the people filling out applications. I was the only black person in the room at that time. I have been speaking to this guy names Raphael about a warehouse position because it pays pretty good! He informed me over the phone very politely that I would be required to pass a drug test, background check, and have a highschool diploma. He said "Great come back tomorrow and we'll get you setup. He told me everything about the job, and I liked it.

As I was leaving this other lady stopped me and was like "Um, what are you here for?" I was like the warehouse position and she was telling me........

everything that Raphael told me, except she added that the company was looking for people who had experience, because they were looking to hire on full time employees and didn't want people to just star and quit. I told her the only warehouse experience that I had, was when I worked as a stocker at Walgreens like 5 years ago. She was like "Well, you might not be qualified for the position then". I was wearing a cashmere coat and had my hair curled up and she kept stressing that I would need to be able to lift like 50 lbs, and I told her that I had no intention of quitting. She started telling me "Oh, well you would have to work 12 hour shifts and be on your feet all day". It almost seemed like she was judging me and assuming that I wouldn't be able to do the job, because of my looks. She then said, "Well when you come back tomorrow, you will speak with someone from the company and see if you qualify. What do you think. Experience wasn't a requirement on the piece of paper I saw.

If you had already spoken to a counselor, the lady (I'm assuming she was another counselor) had no business talking to you behind Raphael's back. It sounds as if she is just trying to discourage you from applying (which *could* mean that your chances of being hired are excellent -- maybe she has a hidden agenda, like a relative who she wants to get the job). As a matter of fact, you might mention the conversation with the woman to Raphael very matter-of-factly, without expressing any negative emotions. If you want the job, go for it! Agency counselors will not be making the decision of who is hired, anyway.
Are you being hated on? I don't think so. There is no reason to assume you are. You haven't done anything wrong. Just go about your business and ignore busybodies like the woman at the agency. Once you begin the job, if you receive an offer and want it, you will have no interaction with the agency people, anyway.

If she is NOT the person who is the Human Resources Manager or anything to do with hiring and firing, then I would just completely IGNORE HER. You need to keep your optimism high and disregard all these factors, I know that it can be emotionally hard, but just keep your focus on getting the job. Discrimination and critisism is something very sensitive, but you need to be sure that it is. As far as I look at your situation it seems like a "judge a book by its cover" situation, You know you are far better and nothing like what she thinks or "assumes" of you. Mexican people, they probably want to save the job & hire illegal immigrants or their relatives who are also illegals coming from Mexico. She was acting rude to you. I say you report her to Human Resources. She was treating you as if you are below her.

Just Forget what the lady said... be confident and when you go back gain tomorrow see yourself well and make them understand that you are worthy of the job and you are not a quitter but a go-getter and you will be succesfull...

It has nothing to do with Spanish people and you are not hated just because they stopped you and asked you why you were there... I've been through that before with other companies, so it has nothing to do with race.....

You need to just keep working with Raphael, unless, the woman who stopped you as your were exiting is the boss/supervisor of Raphael. Good Luck!

It's possible there's some discrimination here, and lying is the WORST thing to do in a situation like this. And, If the person does hate you based on their judgements, then why would you want to work for them?

They probably are judging you on your race not because they dont like your color but because of statistics. Mexicans on average get jobs and never leave. Blacks get jobs on average and quit after a few months. Sorry to say there is no way to prove that is what they are doing, but it more than likely is. This is pretty common in non-name recognized companies and smaller companies. Giant multi-billion dollar companies dont do this (like pepsi, coke, or other places that have big warehouses) Unfortunately you are going through an employment agency which is usually a franchised small business and they generally look at a person and judge them unless you have some kind of talent that they need bad. They dont want people to get a job and quit because it looks bad on the employment agency and they will judge you by whatever they can to try to figure out if you will stay or quit. Mexicans will generally get those warehouse jobs first (dont worry they do this to white people too cause we generally quit those warehouse jobs also after a few months!) :P
