Am I really stupid for wanting to do this?
|
First off, I really don't mean to offend people but I've been wanting to move out of the U.S for a while. I've either wanted to go to Canada or India, mainly for a change of pace.
I've been wanting to be a lawyer ever since I can remember, and was talking to some of my Uncles who live in Canada, and he said the lawyers make a ton in Canada. Every lawyer. See I'm still in high school, so if I were to go to the U.S I would go to just a decent college and may not make too much money. But according to my uncle, every lawyer, no matter what school you go to, will have a good career, so its less of a risk.
Plus, I play these Indian drums, and the college I'm looking to in Canada offers a class on that, so I would be thinking of doing a double major, one for the Indian drums, and another for somethig like poli sci, business or soemthing like that.
I've also been thinking of thinking of this because it seems the U.S is on a decline while Canada is on a rise, such as the economy.... Additional Details My parents were just saying how the money value used to be much better, comparing U.S dollar to Canadian. Now its something like $0.93 U.S dollar to 1 Canadian, and the Canadian dollar is still rising. So thats another reason why I've been thinking of going to college in another country.
The only problem is the Legal System in Canada, I mean I've been learning a ton about the U.S Legal System and know must of it, such as the Bill or Rights, Amendmants and stuff like that, its just I"m gonna need to learn the Canadian legal system, which I don't think shoudl be too much different from the U.S.. right?
idk, I'm pretty much asking if this is a stupid idea for me thinking this way, or if i can actually work this out?

It's great for you to be thinking about this so early in your career, so keep thinking about it. There are great universities and colleges in Canada, but on the lawyer thoughts, I don't think you can say that all lawyers in Canada make a ton of money. It really still depends on what type of law you practice, where you live and what type of firm you work for.
Yes, the economy is on the rise in Canada, as well as India. But you will be looking at another 7 years atleast until you enter the workforce if you're thinking about university than law school. Seven years is almost a whole economic cycle.
But you can also look at different cities in the US, or even Europe. Also, might want to think about your eligibility for financial aid for university in Canada, where you would need to be a resident. You may already qualify for financial aid in the US. Keep your options open. |

lawyering is not easy and quite stressful. you can make a ton of money as a real estate broker anywhere in the u.s. with just a few weeks real estate classes. look in the yellow pages under real estate and see which realtors offer classes. you can do this as soon as you're 18. just helping people fill out paperwork to buy orsell a home. make huge commissions. and if you work independently rather than for an agency, then you have free time to play the drums and travel. |

Several points to concider:
1. REALLY REALLY GOOD lawyers earn a lot of money no matter where they practice. Big cities, of course, have more opportunities. Be prepared to work long, hard hours. If you are serious about the money thing, forget the drums. Also, forget about family, friends and sleep. You will have to eat, sleep and breath law in order to get good. Once good, you will never have a free moment, because you earn money by selling your time.
2. A mediocre lawyer will make mediocre money, no matter where. Also, a slacker will make no money anywhere, ever.
3. There are more important things in life than money. I am serious here. If you have a passion for the law, you will find more happiness practicing law than you will find spending the money. I have a passion for the work I do, and it does not pay at all. I love my life. What could be better than that? It took me a long time to find this out, but don't take my word for it. You can always waste you life chasing things that don't matter, then you will know for sure. But you will also be dead with nothing to show for it.
My suggestion: Take a year off after high school and check out Canada. It is a big place, so wander around as much as you can. Ask a lot of good questions. If after a year you think Canada is for you, find the best school there that will have you. Study hard. Make plenty of good friends in your chosen field.
Also, don't worry about the US economy. Many areas of law actually are busier in a bad economy.
Good Luck |

You see.. There are not a lot of difference between Canada and the U.S... well I mean depending of where you want to go in Canada... Most of the people when the say they want to come to Canada usually plan to live in Quebec or Ontario, the major big province, where there is a lot of university, college, and lot of work opportunity, but the lifestyle is similar to the U.S...lots of cars, shops, restaurant, nightclub, ... if you look at the political issus... well our two prime minister are best friends ( harper and Bush) so dont expect much difference... if you plan to Quebec right after high-school.. im pretty sure you'll have to go to college (cegep) before going to University .. thats how it works... and the health service are free if you have health insurance (obligated) in Quebec. So it has some good points...
I'm not really sure about what your uncle told you about lawyers but i'm not sure of the '' get a job regardless of the studies''... for what I know... lawyers are not really in demand ( unless you do a lot of studies)... what Canada need is doctor, nurses, businessmen/women, but I'm not sure that we need a lot of lawyers... and even if you do a lot of studies... you'll need to find clients which are not easy to find... there is a lawyers office in front of my house and there are not lots of clients... I really think its gonna close... anyway...you probably wanna talk to real lawyer to know what they think about it.... |

Why don't you go work for your uncle in Canada for a summer, or if he is not a lawyer, maybe he can find you a job w/ one up there. My suggestion: go to college in Canada and find out if you like it there. I think after a year or two you'll know. And in the summers if possible, see if you can travel to India or Laos, etc. to visit. You have a long time yet before you have to make up your mind about all of this and have a lot of time to find out if you like it before you decide. Good luck. P.S. The high Canadian dollar makes it more expensive to live up there vs. american money. |
