Am i being over the top?
Find answers to your legal question.

Am i being over the top?

just a quick question reguarding work... basically i work 9-5 monday to friday and next week our manager has put us onto shifts e.g. mon 8:30 - 16:30, tue 9:30 - 17:30, wed 8:30 - 4:30 and so on... this is taking part from now on... i have sent an email to the manager suggesting 8:30-16:30 one week and 9:30 - 17:30 the next...

am i going over the top... to be honest i think it is a silly way of doing things.

HELP!!!
Additional Details
yes... they will be working the same. half of us start at 830 and the other 930... so it is all coverd. i just feel like it is a big unneccessary mess about. would be so much easier to swap every week instead of everyday... and a few of you are right i will have no social life... coz al b nackered!!!

The manager should have held a meeting before organising this change it seems a bit unprofessional. If there is a reason why you cant comply to the change as it is then talk to your manager face to face you may get your point across better. If there isn't a reason for you not liking the change other then its a bit all over the place then i wouldn't bother pursue it anymore.

no i think your right to make a suggestion... your not being over the top.. it should have been discussed with you prior to the changes..

Your manager is obviously trying to get an extra 30 minutes coverage per day at the beginning and end of the shifts for nothing, very sly move this. You all have contracts of employment,by law he cannot vary this without your agreement, end of.If you agree to the idea of altering your hours of work/working conditions, then a payment for such is to be negotiated to compensate.Your move, your life, normally ,in offices you are not together and as such are in a very weak negotiating position, unity is the key to success. You can insist on remaining on your present working system, especially if your hours of work are laid out in your contract of employment, any tribunal will find in your favour.Your proposal offers more weekly stability to the staff than the management proposal though.

I think your request is reasonable. I'm guessing your boss wants to make sure there is someone available everyday anytime between 8:30 and 5:30 without making individuals work a nine-hour day.

Your suggestion is just an alternate way of accomplishing the same basic goal.

As its only half an hour difference either way then i dont see what you are so bothered about, fair enough every day is probably a bit awkward but i am sure that there is someone at work that you could swap start times with so you start and finish at the same time everyday and as long as everything is still covered then management shouldnt have an issue with it either.

I think it's a very sensible suggestion and most people would probably prefer to fix their hours over the week on a particular shift. What possible difference can it make to the company if everyone else is ok with your solution.

it might be so that s/he can cover the phones better or something. the truth is, if your work place is generally tolerable, this is a minor complaint, so just let it go. if it doesn't work, it'll be obvious to the manager and s/he will change it.

leysarob
It's really not a huge change -- don't obsess.

Go with the flow.

You certainly don't want to appear like a complained or not a team player to your supervisor. If it doesn't work out well, the supervisor will change it. Sometimes there are reasons for changes that aren't obvious to the employees. Just do your best.

Tough situation. If your work hours have been constant since being hired then you obviously have a right to complain about the issue. If the work load or demands of the job now have changed to reflect additional hours or different schedules then perhaps it is in the best interest to go along with it. Either way, you definately have a right to make suggestions or question the changes.

hey
i agree with the 1 week 8:30 - 4:30 then 9:30 - 5:30 other wise everyones gonna get confused, but then some people might like it the other way,
all you can do is suggest but there prob say no lol

Lily G
No, i think you're being logical about the situation. I'm sure there's a reason why they're doing it, though. Just find out the reason.

ALAN G
No your not. What is his reason for doing this?
If your present system is working ok then why change it. Will he be working the same rota system himself? I doubt it!

It's only the difference of an hour, so your suggestion is completely in line. Ask around, you may have a bunch of co-workers who agree with you and then you can present your idea together.

It's not like you are compaining about them changing the hours, you just have a more logical suggestion to how it could be done better.

My husband's company had this brilliant idea to save money last year by closing on Fridays in the summer. Problem was, they ended up paying more in overtime because guys kept getting called in for emergency service calls. A more logical approach would have been to have half the guys work alternate Fridays....that way everything would have been covered.

I think so. Just accept it and move on. Unless you have pending situations that will not allow you to work that schedule. Then I would ask them for the latter.

no ur being quite sensible...how are you supposed to have a life outside work when the hours change daily?

shif work is bogey but at least with your suggestion its a little more regular!

Scatty
Not at all- but remember he is your boss and what he says goes so be extra careful that he doesn't give you your calling card.

I dont see the problem unless you ahve children adn you have to work around them, plus he has to give 30 days notice to change your hours- by law

Everyone is entitled to make suggestions. Maybe you should have given reasons for your suggestion. ie, easier to maintain a regular weekly schedule as oppose to alternate daily, more confusing.

LILLY J
to change your working hours you must have at least two weeks notice,

no you are not going over the top, if questioned say that you are concerned you will comi in the wrong time on the wrong days and it is more convenient to do a week of each

A friend of mine is going through the same thing, she works for e-on. What stupid person comes up with these ideas.Apparently they are being flexible towards the customer. What a load of S**t.I doubt if your e-mail will do any good.

Pam H
They pay you to be there when they need you, not when it is convenient for you. I can understand a changing schedule would be difficult for you, but you are free to look for another job. It does sound like a silly way to do things, but they are the bosses.

jbhurst01
It sounds like your manager is making things complicated for you and your co-workers. Unfortunately, he/she is your boss, While you can always suggest what you feel to be a better system, the manager calls all the shots and may or may not agree with you. Good Luck!
