Any court reporters out there!? I've reached my plateau = (?

I'm currently a student at 160 wpm. I can not seem to get past this speed. Any suggestions? Any training techniques that are effective? I've tried dictating slowly, and then fast. I need more help and it's becoming more and more stressful.

I'm not a court reporter, but went to school for court reporting and worked in the judicial system.

Good for you at 160. Don't give up. Plateuing happens to everyone and eventually you'll break through. I went through the same thing. Frustrating.

Raise your practice speed to 170wpm, even though you won't get every word initially; however you ears will become trained to the speed. NCRA has speed cd's and cassettes. Literary, Congressional, Q&A, Jury Charges, even newscasts, especially when reporters interview people on the street.

Do "book practice" - grab a book and write what's written. It helps with accuracy and words you'll be forced to either shortform or write out.

Don't practice the same take more than once. You'll become too comfortable and familiar with it. Challenge yourself with different material.

Keep a notebook of your progress-date, type of material dictated, speed actually dictated, number of errrors and a notebook for outlines and vocab.

Hope the above helps. I still have my manual shorthand machine and am thinking of returning to school.

Good luck

Warning! Jobs in the field of Law are drying up FAST!! This is NOT a good field to invest in. Many reasons. Main reason?....We simply have WAY TOO MANY Legal Professionals - we have a GLUT. ("Legal Professionals" includes, but is not limited to: Attorneys/Lawyers, Paralegals, Legal Assistants, Legal Secretaries, Bailiffs, Court Reporters, etc, etc)

The law schools know the economy is SATURATED, but they continue to churn out graduates because law students are easy money for them. (They have to invest very little in a law student.)

Suggestion: Look into and consider the field of HEALTHCARE! LOTS of jobs there! and scholarships! Especially with your background.

Good luck.
