The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) sets wage, hours worked, and safety requirements for minors (individuals under age 18) working in jobs covered by the statute. The rules vary depending upon the particular age of the minor and the particular job involved. As a general rule, the FLSA sets 14 years of age as the minimum age for employment, and limits the number of hours worked by minors under the age of 16.
State laws may be involved as well. For instance, in Ohio, those 14 and 15 cannot work before 7 AM or 9 PM, nor work more than 8 hours a day, while school is out; when school is in, it's 7 to 7, and no more than 3 hours a day. Your state will have probably have different rules.
Newspaper carriers work before 7 AM, right? They can do it because newspaper carriers don't work for the newspaper; they are "little merchants". You can skirt virtually all the child labor laws, if you're self-employed. |

depends on where you live and the type of work. I am from Iowa and my first job was at 14 at burger king, I had restrictions on work I could perform though until I was 16 (no washing dishes or going into the freezer). In some places you can work even younger if the work is on a farm (detasseling corn or walking beans) |

well, you can work for cash at any age. but if you want a check you got to be 16, and pay taxes. |

It depends on what state you live in. go to www.dol.gov search around and you should find the answer. I need a summer job too. Often it is 14. |
