Anyone over 50 having trouble finding employment in America?
|
Additional Details Considering the feedback to this question, let me expand on the reasons for asking it. I was laid off from two jobs in a row due to down-sizing and company out-sourcing several years ago when I was in my early 40s. Since then, my quest seeking employment in my former job field has been the most difficult experience in my professional career, which I now believe may be due to "age discrimination." This is a silent, unspoken phenomenon in the employment field in this country as potential employers are able to refuse interviews based on the fact they can just indicate that the position was filled. It's strange that before I turned 40 I had no problem finding employment.

Welcome to the ranks of the "over qualified". Despite laws against age discrimination, it is very common. They don't even have to indicate that the position was filled.
You made too much money -- they can hire 2 less experienced people for what you got at your last job.
You worked too long for the same employer -- set in your ways.
You have too much experience -- the interviewer knows your qualifications would get you promoted over him.
For starters, change your resume style to list your skills and achievements rather than list actual dates of employment. Don't put graduation dates or anything else that could be used to figure out your age. You'll get more chances at an interview if your resume doesn't hit the reject pile during the first sort. |

I understand how you feel; try to put this in the back of your brain when interviewing. You're going to have to try to lay this aside during interviews. I wonder if you might consider starting your own business - you are at a good time in your career for this; it's risky I know, but if you can network with people, it might be easier. |

My mom is an excellent nurse who worked at Duke Hospital for several years. She quit (at age 47) when I was hurt in an accident to stay home and care for me during my recovery, so that I would not need to go into a long term care facility, where she feared I wouldn't get the care I needed. Now that I am well, several years have passed and she is 52. She never had trouble finding work before and suddenly doors are slamming in her face. She is well educated, very skilled and possesses an excellent resume. She should have no trouble and yet she can't find work anywhere. I don't believe it is just our poor economy - nurses are desperately needed in our area, which is known as the City of Medicine. So what's the problem? Her age. Employers don't feel justified in hiring someone who will need to retire soon. I am facing similar yet silent discrimination as a newly disabled woman. I as a skilled secretary with a strong resume when I was hit by that truck. Now I'm 29 years old and can't find any work that is worthy of my resume and education. It's a terrible problem in America. You are not alone. |

You do not mention what field. It looks like you should probably be looking outside the bubble, or comfort zone. It appears the field you have your mind set to is not a very secure one, especially if it is a business that is out sourcing. That means it will only get worse. And I don't particularly think it has anything to do with your age, all age brackets are finding it difficult to find a decent job. |

Age discrimination in hiring is almost impossible to prove - that doesn't say it doesn't exist. And since the job market has changed drastically in the last few years, having trouble finding a job might have nothing to do with your age. You don't say where you are or what kind of job you are looking for - that would have a great deal to do with your prospects, regardless of your age.
Try updating your resume to leave off jobs that are far back and anything else that would indicate your age.
Good luck. |
