I moved to Virginia at the end of this past August for a job. Which had given no indication it was going to be contract when I was first hired, otherwise I most likely wouldn't have moved. Cut to the middle of January everyone left on contract was laid off. They told us when we left that we would be able to collect unemployment. I filed for unemployment and received in the mail today a letter telling me I was denied because I must have wages in at least two quarters to qualify. The base period goes from 10/07 to 9/08 though in which I only worked on month. I found some part-time work but I still need at least partial unemployment to be able to get by for at least a couple of months. Is there anything I can do about unemployment? Is there any other sort of assistant I might be able to get to help out for bit? How does the wages in two quarters work for being able to receive Unemployment? Is there any chance I can win an appeal for this?

job loss is just one of the qualifying factors (this one you met) along with previous income, ties to the workforce etcetera...
if you don't have the income (during the base year) to qualify there is nothing to appeal.

seek help through the department of human services, you may qualify for food stamps as well as housing and utilities assistance.

the job center/unemployment office also can assist you in your job search, training, counseling, application and resume assistance.
