Applying for a Job with a Record?

So the other day my friend and I got in trouble, my friend stole some things from wal-mart and I was with her and knew she was doing it so I got the same charge as her. Unfair and I'm in college so I don't have money to get a lawyer. It doesn't matter too much since I will be getting it off my record with community service but for right now its gonna be on there. Anyways, I want to apply for a job in my college town in the second semester as a waitress or something, do jobs like those usually check your records? ALSO, for christmas break and summer I will be working at my old job at a super-market. I have worked there before for 2 years and all I have to do is talk to the lady and I think re-apply for the job. Do places like super-markets check for records? Thanks!

"I was with her and knew she was doing it "
and you reply: "Unfair"

yes this probably will show up if a background check is done.
once you are in the system and the knowledge of the crime is on the internet even once it is expunged at the courthouse this may show up.
by law if it is expunged it should not be held against you (FCRA) but try to prove that it was (illegally) or get it changed once it has been considered.........

i would worry more about your attitude and the fact that your only concern seems to be that you got caught not that you did something wrong. employers use these checks to verify what applicants have told them and to have a point of reference to how you have changed and matured over time. your concern needs to be learning form the mistake, taking ownership for your actions or lack of actions and turn this into a positive for growth.

many employers that you will be applying to while in school do background checks even when they do re-hires such as your old job.
most employers you will be applying with after you get your degree will do background checks and that is when this may really cause you issues. so learn from this and be prepared to deal with the consequences for years to come. how you deal with them will determine your future.

Get a public defender and have them try to dismiss the charges against you. If you were not shoplifting, you should not get in trouble for it.

Most waitressing jobs and other low paying jobs wont care about something like that.

but you can also try to get your record expunged (if you can't get the case dismissed) so that when you get out of college and are looking for a career, it wont be on your record at all.

unfortunately, they do check for a back ground..the job you had in the past might just start giving you hours with out the background...For applying for new ones when will it be off your record? doesn't it take several years for that? did your friend take an amount costing over an amount for it to be a felony? or a misdemeanor? that could help to find out the time frame...take it as a learning experience and chose your friends wisely...good luck..

A big-box retailer has the resources to check on things like those. It's best to be honest early in the application process. Felonies are a problem, but petty misdemeanors are forgivable. In the worst case, you should drum up the funds to hire an attorney to expunge this offense.
