ya, i worked in hr and if we couldn't get a reference they never got offered a job.

Absolutely. Former employers are the best references, but if you don't have any work history, then teachers, coaches, community leaders are good character references.

Yes. Even if they're just character references. Sometimes it's difficult to get employers references if you've been self-employed or out of work but if you don't provide any references at all it looks bad.

Pretty much. If you really have no former employers see about places where you've volunteered or teachers or any other activities you may have been involved in.

A few are very good to have, when you do not put any people tend to wonder why

Yes references are must sometimes for getting a job especially when you are switching a job because these are the real cirtificates of your dealing and your job commitment.

I've always put a subheading on my resume that says "References available upon request"

95% of the time they have requested them. You can use personal references and/or business references depending on the type of job you are applying for.
