Are shows like law and order, and csi realistic at all?

I have started watching csi ny, and law and order svu and i got this idea that i wanted to become a detective when im older. Are the things they to real? What is the differences between hollywood and reality?

Well, let me tell you right now, that CSI is really fake. If every crime scene in the world operated like the ones in CSI, the police crime solve rate would be zero. They walk all over their evidence and contaminate it to no end.

SVU is a bit more realistic. You can only be an SVS (the real term is Special Victims Squad) cop for two years because the nature of the crimes investigated are much more horrid and gruesome in real life than they portray on the show.

You would have to be a rookie cop for a while and get a lot of collars under your belt and grow experience before you can become a detective. In other words, you can't just walk in and be "I want to be a detective."

Hollywood glamorizes things a lot. The jobs sometimes aren't as exciting as portrayed, and it is much harder to gain evidence in real life. All the technology they have on SVU is so advanced...even the Feds don't have it in use yet. Courtrooms are also much more exciting on the show than they are in real life. A lot of the things the lawyers wear and say wouldn't be tolerated in real life.

The pay isn't too great for detective. I mean, it is nice and steady, but Mariska wears wayyy too many leather jackets and designer clothes for us to actually believe she is living on a detective salary. (But we love her so much, anyways!!!) Mariska plays Benson on SVU, by the way.

If you want to go into law enforcement, go for it! It would help our country greatly. But, look on real websites for different police department info and don't trust the television too much.

Instead of investigating a scene of a suicide bombing, you might be looking for hairs on a pair of pants for a few months.

Forensic Scientists life are not nearly as glamorous or dramatic as they re on those shows, don't take what you see on them as fact.

Some of them are based on real events. I watched this episode of Law and Order and it was based on OJ Simpson and his book. But some are just totally made up.

Law and Order is a show that exists mainly to convince the citizens of the US that there are situations where our constitutional rights don't matter and that we should accept this, because cops need to be able to do what they have to do to get the job done.
