Are there laws that prohibit discussing HR related issues?

I work remotley and have a new boss that isn't taking to it very well. I heard through the grapevine (coworker) that my time with the company may be limited. Are there laws that prohibit companies from discussing issues like this with someone other than the appropriate people...myself, HR, manager or supervisor?
That was always my impression.
Additional Details
The way I understand it is this was something openly discussed within the office. Not a passing comment or an overheard conversation.

there are no laws that restrict conversations about a business or those who work for it. discussing performance issues or future prospects of employment for a particular employee or a group of employees is in bad taste but totally legal. if the conversation took place it well may be management letting employees know that cut-backs are on the horizon and the first to go are those who are working remotely. in this case it would not only be legal but also appropriate and prudent.

as always defamation of character is a civil issue but hard to prove and even harder to show some financial loss due to it. to be defamation the person must make untruthful statements that they know are untrue and have an intent to cause harm.

I'm not so sure about the legal side of things, but it sounds like someone has been behaving less than professionally.

There are, but I don't think a passing comment about the viability of a position would be included.

There are laws, but none to the effect of what you are inquiring about. Although it is absolutely poor business etiquette to discuss with a co worker someone is on the chopping block it's just talk. Office gossip. Be happy this person has a big mouth. You've been warned you may be out of a job soon so begin looking for something else now.

I do not know of any laws prohibiting "grapevine" conversations, rumors or gossip. Are you assuming that it was an official discussion with your co-worker?
