Originally, the word attorney meant representative and is still properly used in the phrase "power of attorney". On the other hand, a lawyer was simply a person of influence, or a counselor. This restriction is still upheld in some court systems; wherein, a lawyer may appear with his client, but not in place of his client.
Now they are interchanged, similar to irritate and aggravate, even though they do not have the same meaning. |
