In the US, each state has a separate bar exam. Qualifications vary by state to just be eligible to sit for the exam... most require a Juris Doctor or (occasionally) an LLM after having also completed a bachelors degree.
You will absolutely not be allowed to practice law in the US in any of the state or in the federal government without having passed a bar in that particular state. You could get a job that required legal skills without practicing law, but you would not be able to call yourself a lawyer.
No matter what qualifications you have internationally (i.e. barrister, solicitor) they will have no bearing here at all and are not considered a lawyer.
If you come here, be prepared to take the bar exam for every state in which you wish to practice. |

Yes if you like to work in the USA as a lawyer then you need to study their law, I would check if I were you this might cost you an arm and a leg, then you need to find out if you can get a job afterwards i.e. to allowed to live there and work.
You will have a much better chances here in the UK, all the best. |

Solicitor and barrister are peculiar to England and some other countries (Australia, Canada etc)
Law is also specific to individual countries, you want to practicein the US you must get a degree there, your English LLB is useless there, unless you want to be employed by a company wanting a resident English lawyer.
Most nations do not differentiate, and there are only "attorneys", "advocates" etc, rather than solicitors and barristers. |

I am in a similar situation. To qualify to be a lawyer in the USA you need to take the bar, as in the UK. To be able to take the bar you need to have taken 1-2 years of American law school (which varies state to state). There is only one course involving American Law, which is at the University of East Anglia. Though it is called "Law with American Law" and you do spend a year in the States it does not qualify you to take the bar in the States. The course has a lot of similarities with taking "Law with American Studies" at many other universities. If you do aspire to become a lawyer in the States I would suggest you follow the "Law with American Law" route as the year in an American Law school will give you the feeling of what life is like there and if the States is truly where you want to spend your career.
Best of luck to you. |
