Becoming a Barrister/solicitor?

Becoming a Barrister/solicitor?

Hello, I am very keen in the idea of being a lawyer, not sure whether I want to be a solicitor or lawyer however. I am quite unconfident in the " public speaking" department. If this a problem. Obviously there is going to be alot of public speaking in the court, but is this skill aquired through university? or do you need to aquire it before going to university? What is the average wage for a barrister/solicitor and what are the hours like? Many regards

I am training to become a barrister. Don't worry about the public speaking. Nobody on my law degree had done it before. It's like anything, the more you practise the better you become. The thought of standing up in a courtroom and even opening my mouth used to terrify me but now it is second nature. The hours and pay for both are excellent. Barristers earn more in the end, once they are established and if they make it to QCs. Good luck. Here's a quote to remember....God said ' I will create Satan so that the people will not blame me for everything, and I will create lawyers so that the people cannot blame Satan for everything'....so funny...

Both parts of the profession (solicitors and barristers) involve a certain amount of time in court, depending on what part of law you specialise. Having said that, barristers do more advocacy so if that is what you are most interested in then go for it. You need to be a very confident public speaker to be a barrister, but it can be learned and you can gain more confidence as you get trained. You have to have a degree, then do the BVC and then pupillage, but it's different for solicitors. Barristers are self employed, and work from chambers and get paid by the work they take on. Wages can go from anything from £30,000 per year after a few years, to £500,000+ per year to more experienced barristers.
My dad used to be a barrister, recently appointed as a judge, and he worked very long hours, 7 days per week sometimes, but he got paid very well for it, because he was at the top of the profession, you have to be very skilled in advocacy to get this far. Having said that, when first entering the profession (as I will be doing shortly) the pay is very poor, there is no minimum wage, pupils are lucky to take home £12,000 per year, but if it's your calling, it's your calling!

All the best

solicitors work more 9-5 so if thats what your looking for then do it. the hours of a barrister...well there are no set hours. you work doesnt finish after court. you will find that you take home your work to prepare for tomorrows case! you are self employed if your a barrister so if you dont work, you dont get paid! luckily theres the taxi cab rule to ensure that all barristers get fair amount of trials.

hello there
have a good business head, know how the system works,
are you a good communicator? you'll need it !!
good luck

Solicitors don't have to speak in court, only barristers, so maybe that would be better for you. Anyway the first thing to do is get a Law degree - focus on that first.
