Becoming a barrister in England?

Becoming a barrister in England?

Right, after much to-ing and fro-ing, I've decided I'd like to train as a barrister. I know the basics - do a GDL followed by a BVC (I did languages as an undergrad), but I'm a bit confused as to the order of play.

I've been having a snoop on the websites of various local chambers and would like to know the following. Given that I have to do a GDL/BVC, which will take two years, when do I apply for a pupillage? I need to get funding for both the above courses. Does a pupillage start when I start my GDL (i.e. 2009) or when I've finished both GDL and BVC (i.e. 2011)?

I'm in the process of applying for mini-pupillages and organising some time at court, but any other general advice (about mini pupillages, pupillages, life as a barrister...anything!) is also welcome - I'm feeling a bit out of my depth and would love some human advice, rather than just dry text!

With thanks!

xx

I'm currently doing the LPC, so my experience relates to applying for solicitor training contracts, but I am guessing the requirements will be similar.

Applications for most training contracts close around 1 to 2 years before the contract is due to start. IE applications for a training contract starting in September 2011 will usually close from July 2009 to July 2010. The best firms have the earliest closing dates. Clearly you need to be researching jobs now to start applying ASAP.

A training contract lasts 2 years and usually starts after the LPC is completed. There is such a thing as a part-time training contract that you can do alongside your GDL or LPC if you are studying these part-time. But this takes twice as long, so overall it still takes 4 years from starting GDL to finishing training contract.

I don't know if there is an equivalent part-time pupillage, but a normal pupillage starts after you have finished the BVC.
