I want to become a lawyer, but I do not want to be one who makes only 35,000-45,000 per year. If I go to Harvard, Yale, or Chicago will I make more than that? I want to be a corporate lawyer. I live in Chicago. Which law school would be the best to go to with regard to salary (100k+) and chances of getting into a top firm?

Even if you go to Harvard, Yale or Chicago, you are not going to start off making over $100,000 per year. Corporations are NOT going to hire an attorney directly out of law school, unless they are a smaller corporation, than you are only looking at maybe $60-70K per year.
You need to start off at the bottom like all other attorneys and work your way up. Most attorneys start at around $40,000 per year and after 5 years experience move to a different position making $60-70K per year. After having 10 years experience is when you are going to look at making $100,000+ per year.
However, keep in mind that the higher the salary, the more hours you will be working. A friend of mine who works at a major law firm in Chicago makes around $150-200K per year depending on her case load. HOWEVER, she works 12-16 hours per day, 5-6 days per week. She spends Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights downtown Chicago and usually goes home to the suburbs Friday night around 10-11pm. She only sees her family on the weekends, which is dissappointing to her, but she loves the money.
In regards to getting into a top law firm, it all depends upon how much experience you have obtained during law school and your grades. The higher the grades, the more opportunities you will have.

Your salary will depend on how GOOD of a lawyer you are. Simply graduating from a top school will not necessarily make you a top prospect. If you want an offer from a top firm, you will also need to be at the top of the class at a top school.
One of the best kept secrets for law students is the law school at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, VA. The school is VERY well connected in Washington DC and has turned out a lot of high earning lawyers and high profile judges. It might be worth checking out. |
