Tell him to **** off.I would knock him out if he was reading my personal mail. The first answer is bollocks he has no right to read your mail

I'm afraid Bub is right. You are paid to use the office computer to do company work on - hence he has every right to go onto your machine to ensure that is what you are doing! Why should he provide you with a building, a computer and a wage to access your personal emails? Personal stuff should be done in your own time on your own machine |

The first answer is correct - as intrusive and unfair as it seems.
If you are using the company PC and / or the company email for personal use, then don't expect it to be private. |

Your boss can do whatever he/she likes whilst at 'your' computer and that is reading *all* e-mails private or not. Everything you use at work belongs to the company and not yourself, that includes any hardware, software and any communications be it on paper or e-mail or any other medium which belongs to the company.....which may contain your stuff.
If you wish for your e-mail to remain private then don't use office stuff. |

Since this is a business owned, controled and monitored e-mail his actions are permissible. In theory, your e-mail should be limited to business operations. If you intent is to have privacy in your e-mail you should not have such sent there.
Most companies have an electronic comunication usage policy and normally outlines the employers ability to view your materials to ensure compliance. |

Well it's very simple, do not use your work email address for personal use!!!
And i think he is legally in the right to read the emails. |

You should never have personal E-mail sent to your work E-mail address.
Your employer provides (and therefor owns) your PC and is allowed by law to access ANYTHING on it at will.
(If you need to get personal E's at work just log into the net and go to your E-Mail as you would at home) |

I answered your other question but thought I would post another answer cos I see a lot of people are saying he has no right to read your emails. I'm afraid he does - the computer is the property of your employer and anything you do on it can be read by them. It's not nice but it's true. Do check your contract of employment - this will more than likely be mentioned in it and technically it is probably a disciplinary offence, if your boss wanted to make an issue of it - if for instance you were sending a lot of personal emails. |

It is an employers right to read anything put on a company computer. If you don't want it read, don't do it at work. |

Yes. E-mail received on a company computer belongs to the company. |

I would bet your company has an electronic communication policy in place. This informs you that all work you do on the computer, fax, telephone are on business equipment and could be subject to monitoring. This would include e-mails being sent or being received. Since the computer you ar using is a company machine they are entitled to look through anything on it. |

Yes he can...why? Because the e-mail account is NOT YOURS, it belongs to the company. He pays for the computer, the internet service, etc.
You can also be legally terminated, and be barred from seeking unemployment if you use a company e-mail account for personal business or internet surfing, as I can GUARANTEE these are against company policy.
If you are that obsessed with e-mail that you are willing to put your job at risk to check for it, then get a blackberry. |

Yes, if it's on company computers, then they are allowed to read it. |

Bring your own personal laptop, then he cant read your emails. You can use it for personal use when you are able to do so, such as lunch time, breaks, etc. |
