Boss refusing to give days off for college! Help?

Do you need this particular course to graduate? Then you must take it now. Put in your request & discuss it with HR or someone over your immediate boss's head. Make it clear that you are committed to attaining higher qualifications and would like to move up into a higher level job at that hospital. Then add that you must take this course on Tuesdays now in order to graduate and get your RN, so the choice has boiled down to the very difficult decision of Tuesdays off between 5 and 9 p.m., or move on to another job which wants a future RN.

Play your cards right and you get your Tuesday classes, promises of a future promotion as soon as you get your RN, and an ally higher up the ladder. If anything goes awry, take your course, get that RN and you will be in demand elsewhere, maybe a bigger hospital in a bigger city with a lot more opportunities for everything in life. School is the right decision here. Go for it and good luck!

The key word in your question is "request." You've asked for it but it doesn't mean you are guaranteed that request. A business, when granting requests off, has to look at their business needs before granting requests off (requests to come in late) and if your coming in late is going to leave the hospital shorthanded, even for 2 hours, that could obviously be a problem for them and patients. Just because a boss grants one request (or 30), doesn't mean they have to grant yours if it effects their business/patients, and no HR dept in the world will force your boss to give it to you off unless the boss is not giving it to you for some discriminatory reason. If you HAVE to take that class at THAT time, then you may have to look for another job.

Sorry, without an employment contract that provides for schedule adjustments based on education or other specifics an employer has the right to not grant an exception.

I would suggest if your in the nursing program now, you should meet with your boss and discuss this. The goal would be to see if your current job is at all compatible with going to school. Look at it from their perspective also. They need to have a schedule to cover a 24/7 operation dealing with patient care. This kind of scheduling is not easy. Perhaps if you approached your boss on how you could work on this together to solve both your need and his/her need you might have better luck.

If this fails, I would suggest talking with the nursing school. Would there be any on-line course that could be taken to meet this course requirement or any way you could work with the instructor to again mutally solve a problem.

You probably need to contact your HR office. If it is standard practice to schedule around school hours then your boss is opening a can of worms. But if it isnt 'policy', then there isnt much you can do.
