ok look basically i want to sell goods to a South African who has agreed to pay me by cheque (500pound) now i doubt the check will bounce but it raised a question that sparked my interest....
If i were from another country, say South Africa and i managed to acquire a bank account and cheque book, what would happen if i was to return home permanently but bought goods on cheque 12hours before i got on the plane, only to let them bounce while i arrive home with the goods?
would the police chase me back to another country? would debt collectors go that far out of their way?
and perhaps to add if this happened to me how would i go about dealing with it or would it be a loss?

It, unfortunately, sounds like a scam, through and through. Why risk it if unsure of whether the money is legit? There is a website http://www.lookstoogoodtobetrue.com where people can write about having been scammed, and the site included a post about one of those overseas money scams. Please go with one's gut feeling, and forget about the potentially illegal money dealings. |

Almost all banks are International corporations, and will happily spend $100,000 to recover $10,000 someone rips them off for, specifically to discourage the sort of silliness you are contemplating. Since you said "cheque" I will guess you are British, in which case it would be especially dumb, since Barclays bank is a South African company... |

They will get away with it, and I would rethink your trusting a check to clear from anyone you don't normally do business with. |
