By Law can a dress code for work include?

making a woman wear high heels????? I did not think it was allowed and neither do my colleagues. Additional Details I would like to add, the job is not as a stripper!!!! It is actually office work.
The uniform now is being made to be very mascualine apart from the women wearing heels. Also the suit and shirt/blouse is provided but not shoes they have to be purchased by the employee themselves.
It was never stated in any interviews that heels are to be worn.
It is more the principle that is the issue that eveyone has. Most people do not want to wear heels as never feel comfortable or able to walk in them.

1st off, does your company provide "uniforms" that must be worn? Do they require special shoes because of the type of flooring or what might be spilt on them such as oil?
2nd, by law the only thing a company can require in the form of a dress code is that you not wear clothing with profanity or vulgar ideas and pictures. Most businesses ask and has become common place that you wear business attire (suit and tie/ dress, blouse, heels) or business casual attire (slacks, shirt, jacket/pant suit type outfits). Most of this has come about as a required "dress code" but there is no law about it.
3rd, IF a company does have a dress code, it must be published and posted in the form of memorandums on company information bulletin boards and in the company employee handbook.
4th, if you really want to get more information about business law, sign up at your local community college for a course in business law and ethics and talk to the professors at your universities, most are willing to give you some great information and advise.
Good luck and hope this helps. |

Their is no law about dress codes in Canada , maybe in America. However, if it's company policy, you bet you have to follow it.
It probably is company policy |

Where I work, heels are encouraged but I dont think I'd lose my job if I didn't wear them. But practically all women that work there wear them, so if I didn't I'd stick out pretty easily.
But yeah I think they could make it mandatory. |

no, but it can be suggested attire and sadly employees can be reprimanded. . . it's injust and not fair but i think it's allowed |

Yes, they just can't specify how high the heals are. Also, if this is a new change you should show your objections, but if you knew it when you were hired, then get over it and find some comfy pumps. |

first of all the person that posted above me is a complete moron. an associates degree does not give you the knowledge to answer these types of Q. yeah all dress codes are illegal sure,
Yes they can make you wear high heels as part of your dress code, unless you are protected by some law and the only one i can think of is probably the ADA. Yes they canfire you if you dont comply with the dress code. and yes this is a stupid policy.
refutan is right on the money |
