Minimum wage is a law.
The next thing that has to happen would be a Union Contract requirement.
Then there is company policy which is whatever they want it to be.
When in doubt ask how ofter "reviews" are given. That's a nice way to ask about raises. |

Unless you are specifically covered by an employment contract which spells out the amount of raises and frequency, no employer is obligated to give you any raises at any time.
And whether or not you have a degree , by itself, is meaningless. |

No, there is no such law. It is only a custom. The only laws concerning the amount of wages are minimum wage laws
But with the recession we are having, just be grateful you have a job. We are looking at a 20% cut real soon to try to save the company and our jobs.

The only thing legalized about salaries is minimum wage. If you work for an agency with a union where salaries are negotiated, your pay and benefits can increase for a set period of time until the next contract. As for free market, as long as you are receiving minimum wage and are not performing tasks outside of your job title, they don't have to give you anything. Check with the state labor office in your state to see if there is anything specific to your area or type of employment.
In the private sector, salaries are negotiated after you get the job and raises are not guaranteed.// |

The short answer is no.
The exceptions to this are if the worker is in a position that is covered by a contract, or a union position, and either of these speak specifically to wages and compensation. It's typically some sort of step raise.
Welcome to the free market! |

There is no law like that. Check and see if the company has any policies to that effect but I seriously doubt they do. The only Law is that over 40 hours per week you must get overtime. Even that law isn't pertinent if you are a salaried employee. If it is a "Right to work" State they don't even need a reason for firing you.
Now, if you are in a Union then check your Union guidelines. They are not Law but will have been agreed upon by the Employer. |

You get a raise if your employer gives you one. |

It was customary in better economic times, however it is NOT the law. In these tough times you should definitely not expect a raise and just be grateful to be employed. Not trying to be rude, it is just the truth. |

for real?
c'mon dude . .the ONLY law about any wage is called 'Minimum Wage'.
Most companies abide by the 3, 6, and 12 month rule and bump up ones wage at those thresholds but . . . dude, there is no law, they can cut your wages from $100 an hour to the bare bone minimum if they want.

WHAT???? Are you serious? No there is no law that you get a raise after a year, or after getting a degree, or for that matter that you ever get one. The only time the employer is required to give you a raise is if minimum wage is increased, and your rate is under the new minimum. Otherwise you could work for them for 20 years, start as a high school student, graduate, get college degrees through a PhD, and there's no law that says they have to give you a raise. |
