CAN A DUI/MIP PREVENT ME FROM PASSING A PRE-EMPLOYMENT BACKGROUND SCREEN?

I was offered a position with Target Corp. contingent on the fact that I pass a background check. I got a DUI and an MIP when I was younger approx 8 years ago. Will they decline my job offer because of my past record?

As the other poster stated can/will two different situations. As a person who has been involved in background checks for verification and competency, there are several things I would look for:
Is this a driving position (If so then more than likely it will have a negative impact on the offer)
If this a Safety Sensitive position (may or may not have an impact depending if this was fully disclosed previously and existing company policy)
If this is a standard position (Front line management, entry-level positions) then it may have no impact.
The other variable is how is this charge classed in your state, for example is a DUI/MIP a Felony or a misdemeanor? And have you moved locations since the conviction?
This also depends on what type of check they went for each with it's own price, 3-5-7 year is the norm background check, usually run in tandem with a credit report and insurance history report. There is also just local and state, and federal checks or combination of all three. They can run your report as far back as they like.
Hopefully, you were candid about the conviction during the interview phase or at least mentioned it. You could also look into having it expunged from your record, which would still be search able in intense federal search.
Be ready to illustrate how you have improved your life since the incident and put steps in place to prevent reoccurring. You could also go to your Police Dept. and request a good citizen letter signed by the chief, this is usually done if you have nothing in the last 5 years. |
