booked a holiday too good a deal too miss , so went ahead and ask work the next day with they then refused , considering going of on the sick for a few weeks over the holiday period , can anything happen to me if they know but can t prove it , manager is just being awkward about the whole thing????

Yes.
They will know and can probably prove it.
At the very least it will strain your relations at work to the point where if you screw up at all later they will just fire you.
Don't think you are the first to try that. |

They can request proof of illness.
If you are off sick for 'a few weeks' they can make you prove you were sick and if you can't they can make you pay back the sick time (in money) and fire you. |

Chances are you will be fired for taking an unauthorized leave of absence. |

Will you be able to provide a doctor's note that you were sick? If your boss calls you at home, will you answer?
You will be fired if you do this. Your boss isn't a moron, one would assume, he can put two and two together. |

They can ask for proof of illness such as a doctor's note. They can also call the doctor on the note and ask questions regrading the illness as well so be careful on that one. |

In these trying economic times, if you plan to force the issue of taking a duly noticed vacation even using a legitimate sick leave excuse; then you should expect the worse case scenario of being fired from your current job. So, plan ahead and start looking for another job since your current boss has shown that he's looking for a scapegoat to exercise his power trip. If I were in your shoes, and had mouths to feed, I would cancel the vacation trip and keep this job but while on my offtime, I would look for another job which is more suited to you.

If you are busted not only can you lose your job, but I can assure you they have a solid argument to bring before the department of unemployment insurance to deny your claim if you file. |

If you have a doctor's excuse covering those days that is verifiable, they can't do anything about it. However, don't be surprised if they start looking at your work with a magnifying glass from that point on. Upon your return to work, you may find that they are pissed and will do everything in their legal power to make your life a living hell. |
