CIA and FBI question (employment)?

I am in the army, nothing like a combat MOS but just finance. I started on a criminal justice degree, and maybe would like to finish it. My question is working for either one, will you spend a lot of time away from your family? Is it like how Special Forces leave without being able to tell your family where your going? Expierence in either field is recommended.

Thank you for serving your country in the Army. To answer your question, one would need to know what kind of job you'd be doing for either organization. If you're assuming that the CIA only has spies and the FBI only has Special Agents, you're misinformed. Both organizations have positions ranging from secretaries to directors of operations...so how much you'd be away from your family would be governed more by the role you're doing within the respective organization instead of which one of the two that you're working for. That being said, it's publicly accessible information on the Internet that specifies the CIA is more focused on International operations whereas the FBI would have more positions within the US. Good luck to you.

Oh and for the CIA specifically, the website states that all people considering employment should keep their desires to themselves. It may not be in your families' best interest for them to know of your application. My interpretation? There will potentially be a lot of work going on that you won't be able to tell your family, for their own sake.

Some jobs don't require the travel that others do. For instance, linguists aren't necessarily on the go all the time, but special agents may be out regularly. You can also look into the Secret Service. They have duty assignments similar to the military.

Isn't it kind of sad that you needed to change your name to "Top Contributor"?

I would say yes, but I am no expert. The FBI and CIA are very time consuming. You might just write to them and ask what type of requirements they have and how much time off is allowed or is offered concerning certain positions.
