Can I ask for a clothing allowance when accepting a new job?
|
I am being offered a job that requires a suit and tie be worn everyday. My problem is that i only have 1 suit. My question is two part: A) Is it ok to ask for a clothing allowance from a potential employer and B) How to you go about it?

I think it depends on the industry. If your'e going to work as a banker, then no, they expect you to pay for your own clothes. If you're going to work as a service person, then that would fall under a uniform in my opinion and yes they should allow something if they require certain attire. |

You can ask. In the real world, it doesn't happen. You supply your own wardrobe and you pay for it. Asking could be considered an adverse reflection on you. |

If this was not discussed with you as a benefit of the job, then it is not appropriate to bring it up now. You are in a professional job and you are expected to dress yourself using the salary they are paying you. |

LOL NO! It's up to you to provide your own clothing! Go to thrift stores to get more suits! |

No. You should NOT ask for a wardrobe allowance from an employer!
You can get nice, decent easy to care for suits at places like JC PENNEY or SEARS.
Buy two more and invest in a home steamer to help you keep them neat and tidy between trips to the cleaners.
Buy a whole bunch of shirts in complementary colors that go with the suits and YOUR skin color. Buy lots of ties that go with the shirts and suits. You can make it look like you have a huge wardrobe with just three basic suits.
But please, please do not ask your NEW employer for a clothing allowance! That is just way too demanding for someone who is just starting out in his working career! |

Heavens NO!!!! You aren't flipping burgers anymore and employers do not provide your working wardrobe...sorry...go to a discount suit broker and get two suits, an extra pair of slacks to go with for each suit jacket, five to seven dress shirts, and 2 or 3 ties and dark socks to match...that should do you for quite some time. |

Don't just ask--it's rude and not a good way to start a new job.
Talk to your boss. Go in expecting nothing, but explain your situation. Say that you want to be the most you can for this job, and for that you'll need at least 2 more suits. Ask him/her where he/she suggests getting a suit and as to how much it will cost.
Don't expecting anything. |

Well some employers don't reimburse for clothing, because a lot of places require suit and ties. It can't hurt to ask. However, keep your receipts and turn them in during tax time...that way you can deduct them from your taxes. |

You can ask but most often it will be stated in the benefits package. I get one but it was listed as a "benefit". |

Hi friend. I would probably go easy on the clothing allowance as you possibly got hired on the strength of your suit as part of your presentation. Like....the whole package thing. If you now go and blow it and say...actually this is my one and only suit......
Can you borrow enough from a friend or relation to get another one? As you will be earning good money you can pay 'em back ASAP.
I will also require my cut....a star...for the excellent advice.
Good luck kid. xx |
