Can I be a lawyer's apprentice?
Find answers to your legal question.

Can I be a lawyer's apprentice?

Okay so I'm seventeen years old and currently living in Arizona. Had some complications with highschool and now I'm studying to take my ged test around September then early next year I'm leaving to Scotland with my daughter to go to college. I want to become a Animal Welfare Lawyer. I was wondering if at my age and where I'm at is there a possibilty of getting any hands-on experience with this sort of thing before I get my ged or before I turn eighteen? I'd love to have experience in the office, with animals, etc.
Additional Details
I know that the lawyers don't work in person with the animals but I want more hands-on experience than what I already have to help me be better at what I want to do.

Also, I know that I can't become a lawyer by being a apprentice. I AM going to college and everything, but as a trainee or apprentice is a great way for experience and I do know that.

You could write/call different law firms and request an unpaid internship. I intern'd for 4 months at my local D.A.'s office. They were thrilled to have someone work for free, I gained experience and was able to get some great work references.

Volunteer with a legal action group or find an attorney who specializes in this kind of law...ask to work for free at first and then make yourself indispensable.....

Your age and maturity can be great assets..

I would imagine it would depend on the attorney's office you applied with, but I would suggest paralegal training first and after you get through with the basic courses specialize in animal rights. You wouldn't necessarily get to see animals a lot, but you would know when you went to court for an animal that you were doing a good thing. A good role model for your daughter.

You may be able to get experience as a legal secretary. However, an apprenticeship is not how you become a lawyer. To become a lawyer you have to go to college then go to law school. It;s not based on an apprenticeship.

Also, I doubt animal welfare lawyers have much contact with animals.

Warning! Jobs in the field of Law are drying up FAST!! This is not a good field to invest time and/or money in. Many reasons. THE main reason?......We simply have WAY TOO MANY Lawyers - we have a GLUT of ATTORNEYS!!!

So even IF you finish law school, you probably won't be able to find a job when you are done.

Now the law schools know this >that the market/economy is SATURATED - yet they continue to churn out graduates. A law student is easy money for a law school - a law school has to make very little investment in a law student, compared to other areas of study.

Suggestion: If you want a job when you are done with your studies, consider and look into the field of HEALTHCARE! (people OR animals) THIS is where the jobs are! and scholarships!

Good luck.
