Can I be charged for losing an office key? Is that legal?
Find answers to your legal question.

Can I be charged for losing an office key? Is that legal?

I have just been given a key to my office. Not a real key, more one of those digital beep thingies that open the door. I was also told that I would be charged the money to make a new one if I were to lose it. Is this legal? They are threatening to sack me if I ever lose it and then not pay for the charges. Please let me know as I cant find any legislation on this.
Thank you!

Yes it is legal

Sure it's legal. You can be held liable for damages or loss to your employer's property due to your negligence.

Don't worry about getting the sack. First off, they can simply dock your wages for the cost. And secondly, the cost of one of those is relatively low, less than a tenner. Sourcing and starting a new employee costs far more than that. (Those electronic keys are far cheaper than having to re-key a lock or possibly a number of locks and then re-issue keys to all affected employees. In this case, technology is on your side.)

However if you are working for a firm that would make such an outrageous statement going in it might be a good idea to keep your "job radar" up and running for other opportunities elsewhere. Their corporate culture doesn't sound very employee friendly.

if they have it written somewhere and you were aware of the consequences when they gave you the key, they that will hold up. You might as well not fight it and just pay.

Yes , It is policy. They didn't "t' make it up if they told you ahead of time. What if the wrong person finds it or it was stolen for a reason. Just put it behind you and don't loose another one. Can't be big money not worth your job. In fact you may get even in another way. Be smart.

Yes it's legal. But the charge for a new key card shouldn't be very much.

this is what you do, put the key under the mat, when you get there, get the key from under the mat, let management know you do this, so if it's lost it's their fault, tell them i'm not gonna f'n pay for this f'n key if i f'n lose it, or put it under a flower plant or some s.hit that's out the door, i'm sure there's a rug you can rip out of the floor too,
