Can I be forced to travel although the job I applied for did not require it?
Find answers to your legal question.

Can I be forced to travel although the job I applied for did not require it?

My supervisor has been trying to get me to travel it not very long distance, but I am not good at driving to difference places. Some places are 1 or more hours away. Today she ask me to travel to a conference that is not one of my grants. I don't know anything about this grant because it belong to someone else. I understand that the person it belong to husband is sick, but she seem to always make promises to go to these conferences and then end up having some kind of family emergency. Can my employer force me to go although the job I applied for did not require travel.

You need to openly discuss your reservations about traveling with your manager. Mention your lack of confidence about driving to unknown places without sounding like someone is forcing you to travel and you are resisting it. Ask your manager to help you with a solution. May be initially someone will go with you till you feel confident to travel alone. Before you know, you will be a seasoned globe trotter.

you can of course always quit your job and find something else.

You could be disciplined for failure to comply with a reasonable request of your employer, in other words - insubordination.

Based on the way your question was written I suggest that you take advantage of any opportunity your employer gives you - you need help with grammar.

Job requirements change. People who are flexible and willing to take on new responsibilities, tend to go further. People who only want to do just what the job they applied for, are likely to be passed over.

No.(But it doesn't look good. On longer distance tell them the truth thast you dont drive well. Sometimes they will arange transportation) I used to have the same problem but I learned to do it once I learned it helped my career being flexible. Longer distances I wold refuse. If you are scarred of driving. Take a practice run with someone you know before you go. It helped me to drive when I knew the area. Also check to see if there are resturants there or nearby or just pack a lunch to eat in the car. Beleive me, i am to scarred to drive if I dont know the area too.

You cannot use a private car to travel on business without changing your car insurance to cover you. If your employer is not willing to pay for the increased cost and demanding you make trips in your own car you could resign and sue for redundancy. If your employer is not willing to listen to your objections you could check your contract of employment and if it makes no mention of travelling you do not have to do it. If you start these journeys you create a precedent that 'by custom and practice' this becomes an integral part of your current contract of employment. Check with your local CAB.
