Can I collect unemployment in California and attend College Part-Time.?
|
I know you have to be available to work and actively seek employment in order to collect your unemployment benefits. I just don't see the problem going to school part-time and still collecting benefits because people go to school and work Full-Time all the time. I just want to see if what I want to do is even legal before I ever consider the idea. Thank you for your answers in advance. =) And Yes I would eventually get a new job when the opportunity is presented to me. Additional Details Actually the company is going out of business so I know I qualify for my benefits I just wanted to makes sure that if while searching for a job, I decide to continue and further my education I will be able to and not have them on my ***.
Alright well thank you very much for your answers, I appreciate it.

Going to school is not a problem with U.I., they will determine your benefits based on why you are no longer working. Did you quit, get fired? You would still have to submit the report to your state department every week or so showing which places you have put in resumes/applications to show you are still actively looking for work. Going to school will not disqualify you from benefits unless you are only looking for work part-time and that would limit your job searching ability and choices. |

Shouldn't be a problem, but ask the u.c. people. |

You should check with the California Employment Development Department here:
http://www.edd.ca.gov/
Unemployment:
http://www.edd.ca.gov/Unemployment/
FAQ:
http://www.edd.ca.gov/Unemployment/FAQ_-_Contacting_UI.htm
There are also two PDFs at the links above (Fact Sheet, etc.).
As long as you are actively seeking work, it shouldn't be a problem.
FYI - a co-worker's husband qualified for UI after quitting his job (too far of a commute) and doesn't need to show proof of seeking employment. Strange....and it's probably not a typical situation. |
