Can I file for unemployment & go to nursing school fulltime?
Find answers to your legal question.

Can I file for unemployment & go to nursing school fulltime?

first off, I know it will be better to call Dept. & Labor but, I am just wondering if anyone knows firsthand ;-)
I was permanently laid off today after 5yrs with the company and I was wondering if I am able to file for unemployment benefits and try and go to nursing (LPN) school "fulltime" at the same time? Will I still be able to draw each week?

If anyone knows please give me your advice on the best way to handle it.

Thanks so much & God Bless!!

I live in Tn.....thanks so much for your replies so far!!

TN Department of Labor and Workforce Development:

They may pay for your schooling (or part of it). I know California did, at one time, pay for people to start "new" careers (but you basically had to be uneducated).

No, you have to be looking for full-time work while collecting unemployment.

No, to collect Unemployment you have to be available for work full time.
At least in Michigan.

According to the rules of unemployment you must be ready, willing and able to accept full time employment, and actively searching for a job. That means that you will have to report companies you are applying with or trying to get hired by each week or every other week to the state. They will not give you benefits if you are going to school and not able to accept full time employment.

You would need to check with your own state for an offical answer.

No....sorry.......BUT.........you may want to check with your local unemployment office......they may have some funding available for your new career...........try it..........all they can say is no.....

Yes, you should be able to if the nursing school is an "approved" school in your state. You can in Ohio. Good luck and best wishes.
