Can I get fired after handing in my notice?

You probably have no recourse if it was not specifically stated in your contract. Most contractual hires have "at will" clauses which mean you can quit or they can fire you at any time & with no reason.

I don't think you have been fired. You have handed in your notice and they have decided that they do not want you to work your notice so are asking you to leave early. Common practise in some firms as disgruntled employees can do a lot of damage to the company.

hi, i think you will find that it may be their policy that you have to give so much notive but, they can get rid of you anytime within that period.

You don't say where you are. In the US that would be legal. Other countries' laws may differ.

If you're in the UK I would get in touch with you local Citizens Advice. It does sound a bit dodgy but best to talk to the professionals on this one.

Depending upon what type of job you held, it is a very common practice for employers to let employees go before the notice period has been fulfilled. You noted that you consulted with the financial director, so if you were employed in a financing position, it would be common practice to let you go as soon as possible.

This would not be considered unfair dismissal, your employment was not terminated by the company, you gave notice of your intent to resign. However, depending on your states laws, the employer may be responsible for paying you for the full months notice.

Although it is typical for an employee to give a 2-week notice, it is also very common for an employer to say "thanks, but no thanks" to the notice period and show you the door.

I think they can but keep that letter as proof and did you put your notice in writing. If you did I hope you have a copy. This is for no other reason than to show to a prospective employer.

So what is the problem? Most companies only want a 2 week notice anyway. so why a month?

You are quitting on them, and then you get mad that they are going to quit on you? They are allowed to fire you regardless if you give a notice or not. And giving a notice does not protect you. As a matter of fact, it gives the more reason to fire you as soon as possible. If you dont want to work there anymore, they will try to get you out as fast as possible. And because you gave them a months notice, it gave them more time to hire someone. And when someone is in place, they do not need you anymore. It may sound harsh, but then again, you didnt need them anymore either.
BUT, this does not rule out the fact that you were laid off, and did not quit. So, you are entitled t unemployment.

You have only been there 10 months, they can do what they want but you will only get paid until the day you leave, you will not get holiday pay etc.

You have been laid off, you haven't been fired. You are entitled to your holiday pay and wages owed.

You consulted the financial director and he/she said a month would be adequate. The boss has over ruled that and said a week will do.

You resigned, you can't dictate terms.
