Im 17 and currently at 6h form. I am not so keen on further education but achieved straight A's in my gcse's. I have recently been informed I can go into law through a solicitors apprenticeship now. Is it true that i can go in as a legal secretary and then take exams through the open university, Or would i have to continue 6th form and then go to university.

I think that you are talking about the ILEX scheme where you train to be a legal executive which means that you do not need to have a degree in order to take the standardised LPC that all solicitors need to have to legally practise in the UK (which by the way will cost £10,000 to do the years course unless you can get your employer to pay it.)
Are you sure the 'solicitors apprentice' thing isn't just work experience? I have NEVER heard of such a thing so I am very seriously doubting its genuine.
I suggest you find out more about this company and this scheme and I know for a fact that you will still need to do your LPC to become a solicitor and Im pretty sure that the open university doesn't do that course. |

You are a straight A student! don't aim low! With your academic record, thus far, you should take your A levels and go to university to study law.
Enjoy your time at university.
Get you law degree. While at university decide whether you wish to become a solicitor of barrister. Both professions have a post-university course you will have to pass before getting a training contract. |

No way, why would you go through the open uni. With straight As in your gcses you could get into the best unis. Its true that exprience is worth more than a degree but you still need the degree.
Think about it, you may not be keen on it but it would be a shame throwing your future to waste like that. Get into a good uni, law is only 3 years and during the summer you can do as many apprenticeships as you like. You can take an erasmus year and go abroad and live in a different country while studying. Trust me, its worth it. I have a friend doing law and in his 2nd year he went off to hong kong for a year. Another friend I have got a great internship with some law firm.
Dont throw it away, further education doesnt take that long, time flies and you meet loads of people, get loads more women ;) and get to do loads of stuff. Besides, no one will care what you've done in the future if they see you havent got the credentials to back it up. Go to a good uni just because you can! |
