Can I help give relationship advice w/o being licensed?

I love psychology, personality types, and how they all work together, and am constantly giving advice to anyone who’ll hold still for 5 minutes, and especially those who ask ;) In these tough financial times, I’ve been thinking of just posting some different ads and seeing if I can make some money by helping people work through problems. There are a few different tests I find really insightful and helpful that I would use. I would also of course state that I am in no way licensed nor do I claim to be able to cure or solve any problems. It would be purely as in “just make me an offer” and I’d see if I could make a little cash, while doing something I love, and hopefully helping people, too.

What are the legal constraints of doing something like this? Are there any?

If you are saying you plan to act like a Dear Abby there are no legal constraints; however, if you plan to actually recommend certain products, etc... there may very well be a legal threshold even with the disclaimer that you are not licensed etc... Only way to avoid any illegalities is to put on the bottom of the ad "For entertainment purposes only."

One can offer service of a companion with good relationship experience. I am not confident that people will expect to pay professional fees for this. And you can not bill for them. All you can bill for is your time as a companion.

Would you mess people up? No, but they might still stay messed up. After a while they may use your opinions to break up, and someone is likely to see that you have messed them up.

How to avoid that? never give advice of that kind. Leave it for them to come to those conclusions, or recommend a book that might assist them to reach the conclusion they need. That is, leave it for someone else to mess them up.

I doubt you could get a business license to do anything that requires a medical degree w/o one.

People assume anyone offering medical care has a degree. I never ask my doctors to see theirs, it is a given that they exist.

I would think you would be setting your self up for some pretty serious fraud charges for practicing medicine w/o a license. even wrongful death, you could really screw someone up.
