Can I quit my job straight away?
Find answers to your legal question.

Can I quit my job straight away?

I have just started a temporary christmas job today and it lasts until christmas eve but it's so tedious and I really not that desperate for some extra cash so i don't feel its worth the hassle working any longer, it's a terribly bad job. If its only a two week job, do i still have to give notice or can i just ring my employer and quit there and then?

Any replies much appreciated, they could make my life much easier for christmas 2008 :o)

Leave straight away and give someone else who needs the job a chance.

If you haven't signed a contract then you can quit on the spot.

If you have signed a contract then you need to agree to the terms of the contract. I.e. If it stipulates you have to give 1 week then you do or they can sue you for the time and hours not worked.

If you have atemporary contract through an agency then you should give a week but if you don't want to then you don't have to.

Be careful not to burn your bridges though if you need these people in the future!

I am not sure if everyone else on here is foreign, but in the UK, you MUST give one week's notice BY LAW. It doesn't matter if you've signed a contract or you're only a temp or whatever ... this is the law.

If you really hate it that much, then you should try to negotiate with your employer over whether you can leave immediately. If you're in retail or something like that, they may allow you to as they won't want to take a chance that you'll nick stuff or be rude to customers or something. Plus if it's a big company, it's likely that they've got loads of other staff who are more than happy to take your hours. But the key to getting what you want is to approach it like you are trying to negotiate, not that you're telling them that you're leaving immediately.

I would give a few days to a weeks notice. Here's why, I know it's only short term but if your decent enough to give them the notice they will prob give you a nice reference when you go to your next job.

I doubt that your employer could do anything if you quit, although he may withold some wages (in which case, seek advice on claiming them back).

If you have all your personal belongings (ie you've not left anything personal at work), I'd just call and say you're not coming in.

Yes you can. Your employer does not own you, you are free to leave whenever you like. How much notice you give is your choice. You don't even have to give any notice at all, though it would be courteous to do so. Giving them fair notice means they may employ you again in future, should you find yourself in need of a job. Not being courteous means they won't.

Honestly the only reason you need to give 2 weeks notice is if:
1) you want to be re-employed by them.
2) you want to put them on your resume and have a good recommendation.
3) you, for some reason, need to take them to small claims court for not paying you. if you quit without notice they can hold that against you.
