Can I still pursue a career as a police officer?
|
About nine years ago, I was ticketed for shoplifting. I was 19 at the time, and was put on a probationary period. If no similar offenses occured, it would not be on my permenent record. I know there is still a record of it because I got a printout from the courthouse . Would this affect me if I wanted to pursue a job as a police officer?

What will most likely happen is that the interviewer from the police department will have you explain that shoplifting charge. Your record should clearly show that you learned your lesson and have learned your lesson since then.
Just be honest when you apply. You cannot go wrong when you do that! Good luck to you! I commend you for choosing such a noble and honorable career! |

Unfortunately, with this on your record, you are not eligible for any law enforcement position.
Since you meet the terms of your probationary period, you may be able to have this expunged from your record with a simple court filing. If you have the funds, contact an attorney and explain the situation. If you need to do it on your own, contact the Clerk of Courts, and request the necessary paperwork. It might be a hassle but worth the effort.
Also, this may seem odd but you can request a pardon from the Governor of the State in which you live. The paperwork is available at your Capital Building. (Yes. Governors pardon offenses as minor as shoplifting when requests are made and these are the types of situations when the requests are made.) If the pardon is granted, the offense is expunged from your record.
Good luck. |

Not really I don't think. You really need a High school diploma or GED, No domestic violence record, pass a back ground check, polgraph, examination, physical test and a written oral test. Just don't lie about anything. Tell them your offense was years ago and you were inmature and it was stupid that you did that. You regret doing that. |

it might or might not- they do an extensive check but they do look at how old u were. Your best bet is to be honest .... my bf was trying to get into corrections and they asked him about him having a history being caught with weed.. and he was honest and they over saw it since he was 20 when it happened and was 28 when applying. He was hired.... go for it- the worst that can happen is they turn u down!!
goodluck! |

be upfront and honest with them, you'll have to take several lie detector test so just make sure that you tell them everything and you should be alright now. Good luck |

I'm not 100% sure of this. If it's expunged I would think it wouldn't mess you up. Call the police department and ask. These things probably vary from police organization to police organization.
Good luck! |
