Can I turn down a job offer that isn't very good while receiving unemployment?

I applied to a lot of different places after I was fired, in the hopes that I would receive unemployment. I have been approved for unemployment benefits and have now been offered a job with a company that would be great; however it is part time, would be a 45 minute commute and pays less than what I am receiving through unemployment and about 3 times less than what I was making at my previous place of employment. Am I able to turn down the position and still receive the unemployment benefits?

Generally the formula for continuing to receive unemployment is that the job offered must be at least 80% of your former pay and no more than 50 miles farther than your last job.

You may be able to draw reduced unemployment AND have the part time job. Call your state and ask them.

They won't know that you even interviewed for a job. I would say you should turn it down. If you would be making less at the job that you would if you stayed on unemployment, then you should stay on unemployment.

I have turned down jobs before and I have been collecting since April. I cannot work 40 hours a week for $200 if I can make $500 on unemployment.

Don't tell them that you were offered a job, otherwise they will stop your benefits. There will be a question on the weekly benefits form that asks if you were actively seeking work - you say yes. They will ask if you turned down any work - you say no, etc.

Good luck :) Keep searching, you can't stay on unemployment forever, the max is like 1 year. So after it ends, you need to have a job anyways.

I am a nurse who works for a homecare agency. I have taken care of one client specifically for 19 years. I worry if she was to die I would be out of work and would need to collect unemployment. The company I work for has clients 45-200 miles away and they would offer me this but it is such a far communte? Do I have to take what they offer? I also work full time and am afraid they would only have part-time positions open far away also? If I decline the company and take the unemployment can they fire me?
