Can I write up a contract myself?

Is it possible for me to write up a legal contract myself that would be recognised in a court of law without the use of a lawyer? If so what needs to be in the contract? And does it cost any money?

The answer is yes you can if both parties are over 18 enter into a written agreement. That does not mean it will be recognized by the courts. You will want to check your state requirements for the proper language. http://www.legalzoom.com is helpful.
I don't think you will be practicing law but it may be worthless at the end of the day. Legal Zoom is helpful. Good Luck. |

A good stationary store, such as 'Staples' or 'Office Depot' will have some pre-written generic contracts that you could fill in with your particulars. Also you may be able to locate some generic contract forms on line, some free, some you pay for. |

You can actually buy some types of contracts at Office Max they come in a packet. Also, you can retrieve legal contracts online for free. Here are a few sites:
http://www.lectlaw.com/forms/f124.htm
http://www.lectlaw.com/forms/f048.htm
http://www.freelegalforms.net/index.cfm?index=forms&filename=form15763.htmhttp://www.freelegalforms.net/index.cfm?index=forms&filename=Form08923.htm
Also, you would have to be more specific in order for me to find the exact form you are looking for. However, you can type Free Legal Forms into the search engine yourself and see if you can find the contract you are seeking. Or type in the name of the contract you are seeking in the search engine and see if you can find one that way. You can get free legal forms online depending on what type of legal form you are looking for. Also, in the Law Books at the Local Library sometimes they will have legal forms in the Law Books at the back of the section for say Business Law, or the Uniform Commercial Code, or you may be able to find a book of legal forms at the library and you could just copy the one that you need. A lawyer is always good, but it isn't always necessary. Also, I know that Microsoft.com has downloadable templates for typing Legal Briefs/Documents. |

Yes you can write up a contract. Call it a Letter of Agreement, Not a contract, and make it simple and easy to understand. Try to stay away from the legallese you hear on the lawyer shows on TV. |

Yes you can write up a contract. But if you leave out anything that's required, it might not be accepted in a court of law. |

Well I'm not sure what kind of contract you want to write up, but yeah you can write them yourself. You have to be careful with the wording and stuff. Some of these court tv shows have sample documents and advice for writing contracts on their web sites. Like JudgeJoeBrown.com or courttv.com. I'd do a search on the internet and see what comes up. |

No, they call that practicing law without a license.
There are certain types of "contracts" that you can write yourself such as a rental agreement of less than 3 years or a promissory note (but not on real estate).
However, remember that just because you put it in writing and someone signs it doesn't automatically make it a legally binding contract....if it violates the law or is so one-sided it voids the legal rights of the other individual, a judge will void the contract. |
