My 12 year old daughter wants a job. we live in Massachusetts. is it legal for her to get one? i mean one besides like babysitting or walking dogs or paper routes, stuff like that. i mean a real job. i know there aren't many but what are some legal ones?

she has all the options of casual labor and gainful employment that is legal for those under 14:
She can mow lawns and other yard work(as casual labor only)
She can clean houses(as casual labor only)
She can wash cars(as casual labor only)
She can Tutor(as casual labor only)
She can work as a pet-sitter/dog-walker(as casual labor only)
She can assist the elderly.(as casual labor only)
She can work as a baby-sitter.(as casual labor only)
just to name a few ideas............................
gainful employment that is legal at 12 or younger in some cases:
She can deliver, or sell at a street stand, newspapers and periodicals (selling subscriptions is not allowed)
She can work as an actor or performer in motion pictures, television, theater or radio.
She can work in a business solely owned or operated by her parents.
She can work on a farm owned or operated by her parents.
When school is out of session she can work on a private farm picking and selling fruits and vegetables.
Massachusetts does allow for those between 12 and 14 to caddy at public golf courses. |

yes! i live in massachusetts and i have a job at golf course in caddying. although i'm the only girl there thats why i get paid so much ahha. any job thats under the table they dont have any age limit |

State law dictates at what age a minor can legally work for an employer. Unless you are planning to relocate to China or Mexico for your child to work, you might want to consider starting up a business for your family and hire your daughter to work in the business. Now, this doesn't have to be a storefront business like a shop or restaurant. You can set up an online presence to sell products or can set up a cleaning business, yard or landscape business, home bakery, craft business or whatever. Just make sure you get your business legal with licenses, tax IDs, insurance, etc. It's not that hard to set up a business but very important to make it legal. The results of the licenses includes buying at wholesale and taking sweet tax credits for costs you would normally pay out of pocket. Your library has a number of books specifically aimed at teens and tweens. Check out "Fast Cash for Kids" by Bonnie & Noel Drew and ask the Librarian for other titles that fit within the 12 year old age group. I began working at 12 and learned alot from the experiences. She can too!!! |
