Can a boss make a worker tell everybody at the job that the worker is leaving or can it be kept private?
|
The worker, who is a lady, just gave him, the boss, her two week notice. She is leaving and she wants to keep it private. The boss wants her to tell everyone right away that she is leaving. She told him that she does not want to tell anyone yet. So the boss said that he is going to announce it to everyone instead. Is that right? Is that legal? Invasion of privacy? Please leave facts, no opinions because this boss is really mean to this one worker and we are trying to help her out.

He, obviously, cannot force her to say anything. On the other hand, there is nothing to prevent him from making the announcement - this is a business communication and as such, there is no implied right to privacy. In fact, many bosses use the two weeks to announce the person's leaving so that other workers can suggest people to replace the worker. Helps to shorten the hiring time. |

You cannot stop the boss from telling everyone/anyone. |

He can't force her to say anything-since she prefers not to announce she's leaving until she feels ready to do so, it's her priviledge.
On the other hand, it's his job to either tell, or send emails to his employees-that's his right as supervisor, not illegal, no invasion of privacy.
Before I retired I didn't say anything to anyone because I wanted to slip out "under the radar" plus I worked in a hostile environment. Sent my supervisor an Email out of courtesy 2 weeks before my retirement date (but never told anyone else, not even my coworkers). The agency threw me a surprise party (I really hate being the center of attraction, but to tell you the truth, I really appreciated the party, minus two obnoxious coworkers.
Your boss was mean to your coworker and now she's leaving? Good! She's leaving on her terms, not his. Tell her I said "Bravo and good luck." :) |

The boss not only can tell the others, he/she needs to tell the others... this is the reasoning
1)Projects being worked on will need to be transferred to other project owners
2.) Current customers will need another point of contact.
3) Others need to be alerted to potential theft of not only physical items and money, but also any confidential or trade secrets.
4) Other workers may have lent/borrowed money or items from the person leaving and they may never see her again. |

The boss can't make her tell anyone, but he has every right to tell people himself. One of the duties of a good boss is to keep people informed about what is going on in the company - and a person leaving is a legitimate communication. |

Something similar happened to me! The coworker was cool at first she was super stuck up but what the hell. Then the supervisor quits and she is the only one that's been there long enough to be the temp. supervisor and so the next day she is another person to us. No longer a part of our "team." She had since been disrespectful and rude to the patients and the rest of the staff. I quit. She told everyone I had quit but I had not said why. Everyone figured it was because of that and it was even worse after resigning because everyone would give her the bad looks. Even though I did not confirm I quit because of that I informed the staff that I was indeed quitting and I handed off all projects that where pending and updated and passed notes to the ones that needed them in order to handle my cases.
Tell her it is 2 weeks and that will be it for good. She took the BS for a while so 2 more weeks will be easy. |

When the worker is gone, all will notice anyway. The economy in America is so bad because Americans have stopped buying American products and so many people have lost their jobs, especially in Texas. |
