Can a company deduct someones wage if they are taking on a new position at the same company?

my friend has worked at this company for nearly a year now and she has been accepted for a different position in the company. however they are saying it pays less which means they would reduce her salary! i thought companys were not allowed to deduct soemones pay only either keep it the same or raise.! anyone have any ideas?

They can 'offer' whatever they like - but you don't have to accept it.

Unless it's a Redundancy situation (and her old job is being phased out), I see no reason why she should accept the new position being offered ... unless maybe it offers more training or better future opportunities ? ...
... in which case she might want to consider it ... otherwise I would advise her to say 'sorry, I'll stay in my current job'.

Did she not ask about the pay level before applying for a different position within the company? Pay can be reduced if an employee takes a lower-paying position.

Where did you get that idea? Companies can do just about anything they want. Unless she has a contract that says otherwise, she may not have any choice.

if your friend has accepted a job on lower pay then she has accepted the change in money. she can still turn the job down and stick with her old job if they'll let her....the lesson? always read the small print!
good luck

A company can decrease someone's wages whether or not they are changing jobs within the company, unless the employee has a contract that says otherwise.

The employee's option is to quit if they aren't willling to accept the lower wages.

They can reduce her pay if she is changing to a job with a different job description on a different grade.
Essentially she would be terminating her old contract and accepting a new one (although she would still be considered to have been continuously employed).
Why has she accepted this new, lower paid post? Was she on a temporary contract before?

IF THE POSITION PAYS LESS THEN IT PAYS LESS.
