Can a lawyer negotiate for a better severance package?

3 years from retirement a friend got a notice that thier position was being eliminated and was offered a severance package or demotion... should they get a lawyer?
Can they negotiate for a bet deal?

You can try to negotiate the severance amount, especially if you are being asked to sign a release in exchange. A lawyer could help with this, especially if there is a credible threat that you will sue the company rather than sign the release. Lawyers are often good negotiators, but they are expensive. If there is no legal threat to the company, why don't you try to negotiate the severance yourself instead of paying a lawyer?
