You can leave it off the resume, but if you leave it off the application - that's a different story and MOST employers require you to complete an application in addition to submitting a resume.
An application is a LEGAL document in which you are saying, by your signature, that everything you've stated is true and correct. If you omit the job and they find out about it, even if it's after they've hired you - they can - and often will fire you for falsification of your application.
Even in the high end professional jobs, people get fired for various reasons and it is often explainable. I'm in HR and it happened to me several years ago after a month on a new job as a single parent with a sick baby and a POS car that broke down...
I'm not sure what your reasons are, but if you simply state on the application, "will explain" that will prompt the interviewer to ask you about it (although even then, many don't really look and won't ask). If you can give a reasonable explanation as to what happened, you are probably fine and you give yourself some credability points for being honest. Be open about and have a solid story/script prepared to include ways to assure the interviewer that the same situation won't happen with this position.
Good luck! |

You ARE trying to hide it. Better off to be honest about it. |

It's true that you are not required to list every employer you have ever worked for. However, if you leave one off, be prepared to truthfully explain the resulting time gap...IF you're called in for an interview. And don't even think about fudging the dates to cover it.
Just remember: While no employer has the legal authority to require you to reveal this information, no employer has any legal obligation to even interview you, never mind hire you, either, no matter how qualified you are for the job. Missing information on a resume is one easy reason for an employer not to even call you in for an interview, especially if that employer has dozens of other resumes on her desk still waiting to be reviewed.
Provide the information and explain it at the interview, if you're called. The worst that can happen is that you don't get the job, but at least your foot will be in the door, which is not where it will be if you don't get an interview. |

If you leave if off of your application and your employer discovers it, you can be terminated immediately for "falsification of employment application". |

They very well can find out and they could fire for lying on your application ~ lying by omission. If that happened, you would then have two terminations to deal with when applying for jobs in the future and that is going to make finding a job much, much harder. |

You are not required to put down every job you ever had...you can focus your resume on experience that is only related to the job you are applying for.
I don't think there is any other way for a new employer to know a previous employer unless you tell them. But they may ask about a lapse in employment if there is a large time gap between positions, so it would be best to have an explanation ready for them.
I have heard people explain this by saying they were exploring other career options or were doing some self exploration or even say a personal leave... and leave it at that. They cannot legally ask you any details on that.
Good luck! |
