The paralegal field is starting to experience changes, meaning that people are looking into possible new regulations and requirements. For now, I don't think there is a rule that a felon cannot work as a paralegal. However, if an employer does a background check, he has the right not to choose someone with a felony.
Also, going to school does not make you a paralegal. Almost all firms want experience, so graduating without it will probably be an issue. You need to have about 2 years, so getting into an entry-level job is super important. Otherwise, you will have a degree that will not be able to be used until you get experience. I am in a paralegal program now and this is my biggest concern.
If you are thinking about becoming a paralegal with a felony background, you should do some research. Make sure that there are no regs saying you cannot work. Again, the field is changing, so you never know what could happen in the future. |
