Can an employee change "unhirable," status?

Once labeled as unhirable or nonhirable, is there a way to ask the employer for forgiveness? And, if the unhirable company buys out a company that the ex employee is already working for, can the employee get fired because of that?
Additional Details
Thanks for your responses! They are very helpful. The details of the situation is that I had to leave the job on emergency but did not want to quit. I take the blame for not giving the employer notice that it was going to take much longer than expected to return to work. When I was ready to work again, I was informed that I was unrehirable since no 2 week notice was given. I was an excellent employee, though, while I was there. And, it's a wonderful company... I appreciate your help!

In an acquisition, all jobs are eligible for termination. The acquiring company can let the former employee go. They are not required to consider their employment history in the intervening years.

My old company had a reputation for never rehiring former employees, but I know for a fact it wasn't true. I worked with many boomerangs.
("So, you thought you had escaped? Resistance is futile"). If there was a need, they were considered.

Unfortunately in an acquisition, if x number of people are being let go, chopping people you chopped before is emotionally pretty easy. I know of one guy who popped up on the radar after an acquisiton was announced. He called to ask current employees whether the benefit package had changed any and was disliked so much that the employees made a point of asking if he was being considered for re-employment and if yes, were any of his current managers going to be interviewed to see if his work habits had changed.

As for your question, the way to get "foregiveness" is to a) let time pass, b) explain the situation in the job interview, c) find a former co-worker or boss who will give your side of the story. In some situations, you need to network with other former employees as current employees may be under a gag order from management.

I think it depends on management and what the full story is. Can you give us some more info?
