Find answers to your legal question.

Can an employer.....?

In california, can an employer make you stay past your scheduled time. Example im scheduled 12pm - 8pm and around 5 pm they say "your staying until 9:30 when say you can go home" I just want to know if they have the right to make you stay or can I leave at 8 when im scheduled to leave.

Yes in every state even "employee" friendly California schedule changes and mandatory overtime is allowed. The nice thing about California is their overtime and breaks laws. If this employer does this they must pay you overtime for the amount of time you work in excess of 8 hours. Depending on when they gave you breaks they may also be required to give you another "rest" break.

See these links for information concerning California overtime and break laws:

Companies can have mandatory overtime.

sorry but they can ask you to stay as long as they need you, if you refuse to do so it is grounds for termination, there is no law that says otherwise

employers can demand what ever they want.. but you go along with it is another thing..

most can have to at least give you a day notice if they are changing your schedule.
