Sorry you are dealing with this problem. Some people can be terrible when you work a job......you face some terrible stuff. Ive been out of work since 2002 for this reason.
They probably are thinking "it's not YOUR grandmother".
Do what is in your heart for your family and just face whatever comes later. Let the universe take care of those terrible people. Forgive them and move on if you have to. Follow your bliss. Enjoy your life.
I hope this helps. |

sorry but as an employer it would seem to me your just not that good of an employee
if you were a good employee your employer would work around a death of a spouses family |

An employer has a right to do whatever they want basically. If they need you there, they need you .. Did you give them enough notice about the funeral though? |

You need to check with Human Resources or personnel to find out what they consider immediate family. Most employers allow time off for immediate family, if they are not considered immediate family then it is your responsibility to take vacation time. |

The employer is not obligated to give an employee any time off except where mandated by law - family leave, for example, is Federally-mandated time off. Military leave is another example.
Bereavement and other personal emergencies are not covered by any legally mandated time off. Most companies do have some sort of a provision which allows employees to take personal time off, such as vacation time, sick time, bereavement, and so on. It is unusual, but not unheard of, for a company to refuse to allow an employee time off for bereavement (heartless, cruel, and all that, yes - but legal.)
Get a copy of your company's bereavement leave policy, or speak to someone in human resources to get vlarification about what is permitted in this case. Many companies limit bereavement to immediate family members only (spouse, child, sibling, parent.)
Good luck. |

Ultimately they cannot prevent you from going to the funeral. However, depending on their written policies, they can refuse to pay you and even threaten to fire you, but usually such actions are negotiable if the employee is in good standing with the employer. |

Check with HR, or consult your employee handbook. |

family comes first, unless your employer is govt and u need to be there. Even then, a leave of absence formally presented may be a good idea in any org |

That's crap. Go to the funeral even if they say no. Most of America is an "at will" employment. Meaning they can fire you for no reason anytime and you can quit for no reason anytime. So, they are gonna do what they want to do no matter what you say or think. |

No one can stop you from going to a funeral. I think you worded the question wrong here.
This is strictly an employee handbook issue here and if they don't have a handbook, then they must follow past precedent.
Even then, a company can fire you simply because they don't like the color of your shirt.
Do what you feel is right. If you can negotiate anything out with the employer, try to. If not, then I really don't think you have much recourse unless you are helped out by an employee handbook. |

Yes, they can. A spouse's grandmother is not immediate family. |

In some states its against the law for them to hold it against you. Call a lawyer, they'll proabbly give the information up front, and then just hang up before they want to make somethign of it. |
