Normally JD`s are changed with the consent of the employee.
Obviously sometimes consent will not be reached and it depends how different the task that is being added to your JD and what proportion it now takes of your time. If for example you work in admin, they are simply adding an admin task, and they give you some notice, you won`t have much re-course. Obviously you could register a grievance though.
If on the other hand they asked you to clean the toilets then that is significantly different from admin and you could argue your case and if that doesn`t work you can consider resigning and going to tribunal [assuming one years service].
In the current climate resignation is a serious issue given the levels of unemployment around the corner.
Good luck!

i'm sure they can by giving you so much notice, 90 days i think. if its a gross change to your contract which means you have no choice but to leave your job you could claim constructive dismissal, but this would involve a tribunal etc. if you're in union speak to them otherwise Citizens advice. I'm assuming you're in the UK, sorry if you're not. |

Unless you have a contract with states otherwise a Company has the legal right to change the content of a job at any time. If you don't agree, you have a choice.
Accept it and perform the job, or reject it and find another job. |

You don't say where you are, and that could make a difference. My anyswer is for the US.
Change your job description? Sure they can. Any if you don't agree to it, you have the legal right to quit and find another job. |

What the Heck
 |
Your Job Description (JD) is a part of your Terms & Conditions (T&C).
Your company can change your T&C and JD with sufficient notice. You will receive the change in writing with a target date of change. You will have a meeting to sign a new contract. If you object, you will have further meetings and after a period of time if you don't accept the changes, then the company would legally cancel your contract and you would have deemed to have left. |

Your job description is not your contract. As long as anything which your employer adds to your job description is actually relevant to your position then of course they can. They can't ask a receptionist to clean a toilet, but as long as the added duty is relevant they can. Anyway, job descriptions rarely list every single thing a job entails, they just give an overview of the job requirements. |

With what is happening these days of letting people go and they make the rest of staff share those extra jobs to save money, well it will be all up to you to either except the extra work or leave. |

No, not without your consent....if the employer does put something on without your permission you could take him/her to a tribunal, |
